Three Thick Smoothie Bowls for Weight Loss

December 31, 2020 By My Healthy Dish

Smoothie Bowls for Weight Loss

If you are looking to shed a few pounds in the new year, these three smoothie bowls for weight loss will give you some go-to breakfast options. You probably have had your fair share of smoothies in the past and with the help of smoothie bowls, you can kiss breakfast through a straw goodbye once you get a taste of these.

You get all the same health benefits of a refreshing smoothie but with something extra: toppings! Toppings are what make smoothie bowls so special because it reminds me of eating an ice cream sundae first thing in the morning- but without the high sugar overload. Plus since the smoothies all feature fruit, you’re getting some proper nutrition like fiber to help keep off hunger until lunch. Each smoothie bowl also has a great source of protein, which is important for muscle during a weight loss journey.

Read more about each of my three smoothie bowls for weight loss to learn about the ingredients and health benefits.

Acai Smoothie Bowl

Acai Smoothie Bowl

You might have heard about smoothie bowls first by way of Acai bowls. There’s no need to go to a trendy smoothie spot when you can make your own Acai Smoothie Bowl at home. You can find serving size packs of frozen acai at most grocery stores, making it even easier to conveniently whip one up yourself.

Aside from the delicious flavor of acai, this powerful superfood is packed with antioxidants to help fight off disease. I blended the acai with oats for fiber to keep you full, plant-based protein powder for muscle, and coconut water for hydration to give it this incredible thick texture that you will love with each spoonful.

Top this smoothie bowl with strawberries, blueberries, and chia seeds for even more antioxidants and to look as pretty as the bowls you see all over the place!

Green Smoothie Bowl

Green Smoothie Bowl

You’ve probably tried green smoothies, but what about a green smoothie bowl? The green comes from an unexpected smoothie ingredient: avocado! Avocado is a great addition to smoothies because it is a great source of healthy fat. But that’s not all, because more green comes from matcha powder. That, plus green tea, makes this smoothie bowl a great replacement for a morning cup of coffee because you’ll get some caffeine as well as antioxidants. Skip out on that morning cup of joe and instead get this bowl of fruits!

Now that we have those special ingredients out of the way, there is one smoothie ingredient that’s pretty typical: bananas. My tip for frozen bananas is to meal prep them and freeze bananas ahead of time. I recommend slicing the bananas first and try freezing in a flat layer so the frozen banana can evenly blend. The smoothie bowl is even topped with fresh bananas, which are a great source of potassium. The fresh kiwis and hemp seeds will not only provide more fiber, it will also give this smoothie bowl some good texture in each bite.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowl

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowl

If you’re looking for a sweet treat without the guilt, try this Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowl. You’ll get a good source of protein from the Greek yogurt as well as the peanut butter topping, and the bananas both in the smoothie and on the top provide fiber and potassium. The indulgent flavor comes from the cacao powder and the shaved dark chocolate. You might be surprised to see chocolate on a weight loss recipe, but because it is a good source of antioxidants, a little bit on the top will treat your sweet tooth without a sugar overload.

Smoothie Bowls for Weight Loss

Now that you read all about my Three Smoothie Bowls for Weight Loss, which one will you try first? I recommend switching it up throughout the week to mix up both the flavors and health benefits each morning.

Witches Cauldron Smoothie Bowl

October 20, 2020 By My Healthy Dish

Witches Cauldron Smoothie Bowl

When thinking of something to serve for Halloween, anything in a cauldron makes sense, but I bet you never thought of putting a smoothie in one! My Witches Cauldron Smoothie Bowl combines a few of my family’s favorite things to make one fun treat for Halloween. And because I’m using some fruits in the smoothie, the vitamins can help balance out all of the sugar from this sweet holiday.

Witches Cauldron Smoothie Bowl

This recipe is another one that I shared with Disney to help spread some fun Halloween treats. I asked my daughters for some ideas on what I can make, and when they immediately said boba, the inspiration kicked in! I thought more about what drink I could make and then how I could serve it, and then the bubbling cauldron came to mind…a bubble tea smoothie bowl!

Witches Cauldron Smoothie Bowl

The star of this recipe is the boba of course, and if you haven’t ever made them at home before, now is the time to learn. If your family is anything like mine, boba is a frequent request but we can’t go out to get it each time, so I started making it myself. It’s very simple in fact: just boil the tapioca boba pearls until they float, remove from water and then add in hot water and brown sugar. If you knew it was that easy, you’d make them more at home too!

Witches Cauldron Smoothie Bowl

To make the smoothie, I wanted to have something that reminds me of a witches brew, and the color that came to mind is green of course! I love smoothies with a banana base for some texture and slight sweetness, in addition to some potassium. To give it that green color I used avocado and matcha powder. You may question using avocado in a smoothie, but believe me, avocados are a common ingredient in Asian drinks. Aside from adding a creamy texture, avocados also have healthy fats! So aside from being tasty and just a tad bit spooky, this Witches Cauldron Smoothie Bowl can also serve as a fun and healthy spell!

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and with my Meal Prep Smoothies, you will have your first meal covered for five days. No need to get tired of the same flavors either, because each smoothie contains a variety of different ingredients to enjoy. Ranging from chocolatey to tropical to the infamous green smoothie, I’ve got you covered for the week!

Here’s my roundup of Meal Prep Smoothies, from left to right:

  • Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie
  • Mixed Berry Smoothie
  • Tropical Smoothie
  • Detox Green Smoothie
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie
Meal Prep Smoothies

Meal Prep Smoothies

Health Benefits

The great thing about Meal Prep Smoothies is you are getting a variety of nutrients first thing in the morning. I carefully chose the ingredients to ensure that you’re getting some important nutrition for breakfast, and it’s varied throughout the week. You can also drink these as desserts and not have to worry about tons of sugar in the evening.

For my fruit smoothies, you’re getting a great combination of vitamins and fiber. Fruits contain fiber to help clean your digestive system, and when they’re all blended up, it makes it so much easier to consume a variety. If you’re looking for an extra cleanse, try my Detox Green Smoothie. Another benefit of fiber is that it helps to keep you feeling full, so these smoothies can keep your hunger down well into lunch time.

For my creamier peanut butter smoothies, you’re getting some protein and healthy fats. The Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie has Greek Yogurt and almonds to help build muscle and tissue, and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie has a secret ingredient for healthy fats. Here’s a hit, it’s green, creamy, and has a pit in the middle!

The best part about all of these smoothies is that they will give you more energy to start your day. Have you ever had a breakfast that made you feel like you want to go back to bed? These smoothies will not have that effect, and you don’t even need coffee to keep you going!

Mixed Berry Smoothie

Smoothie Tips

Meal Prep Smoothies are such a convenient breakfast. If you ever come across some extra fruit, you can just cut it up and freeze it so that you always have the fruit on hand ready to add to the blender or NutriBullet (affiliate links). I especially find this helpful with bananas. When I have bananas that are close to becoming overripe, I just cut them up and freeze them in portions so that it’s easy to add. I find that freezing them in separate bags so I’m not adding too many or too few bananas from a huge bag.

You can also use fresh fruit, but just make sure to add some ice so that your smoothie will get that icy texture that makes smoothies so refreshing!

Detox Green Smoothie

Detox Green Smoothie

Meal Prep Tips

These Meal Prep Smoothies, along with my archive of other smoothie recipes, can help you develop a love for a quick and easy breakfast, and it can get even easier if you meal prep them.

To meal prep, I find that mason jars are a convenient way to keep the ingredients together and ready to be added quickly to a blender, but you can also use freezer bags or other containers. Just make sure to keep the liquid out of the freezer and add it when you’re ready to blend.

Sometimes the mornings can be so rushed, and skipping out on breakfast can leave you feeling depleted by lunch and with more room to overeat. But since blending a smoothie can literally take less than 1 minute, there is no excuse not to have a healthy breakfast. So spend a little extra time at the beginning of the week to prepare each of these smoothies to make it easier for you in the morning. Your future self will thank you!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

When you see that a Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie is part of my Meal Prep Smoothies line up, you might be thanking the heavens for allowing one of the most decadent flavor combinations into your diet. Chocolate and peanut butter are a dream combo, and with this smoothie, you get to indulge in that without the guilt (even if it tastes like a milkshake). The secret to this smoothie lies within a hidden ingredient that provides not only its creaminess, but also some health benefits. What’s that secret ingredient?

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Health Benefits

What makes this Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie unlike any other is the addition of avocado. After it’s all blended up, you can’t even taste it, and you can’t even see the green at all. Believe me, I gave this to my twin girls and my husband and they didn’t even know there was avocado inside.

If you are on the keto diet, you may be used to chocolate and avocado desserts, but if you have never tried it before, be assured that this combination is one to love. Since the keto diet is all about low-carb and high fat, the avocado provides healthy fats from the omega-3 fatty acids. The avocado also provides a creamy texture without having to add bananas, which are not part of keto due to the carbohydrates.

Another ingredient with healthy fats is the peanut butter. Peanut butter is also great for giving a boost of energy, and let’s not forget that it has that indulgent flavor that can make you feel like you’re drinking a milkshake. In fact, you can also drink this as a dessert and not have to worry about tons of sugar in the evening.

If you prefer a little sweetness, you can add 1 teaspoon of honey, but honestly, I think it tastes great just as it is!

Meal Prep Smoothies

Meal Prep Smoothies

Smoothie Tips

Aside from the flavor, another thing that I love about this Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie is that it’s so easy and convenient to make. It barely requires any prep as the most you have to cut is an avocado. I like to use real peanut butter in this smoothie to keep it higher in healthy fats, but you can also use peanut butter powder if you want to keep the fat down.

For my smoothies, I’ve been using a NutriBullet (affiliate link) lately as it’s so much easier to manage and clean when I’m just making a smoothie for myself.

Meal Prep Tips

I have a variety of smoothie recipes that can help you develop a smoothie meal prep. I can get tired of the same flavors every single morning, which is why I like to switch it up. This Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie is a great contrast from drinking fruit-flavored smoothies.

Detox Green Smoothie

Detox Green Smoothie

Detox Green Smoothie

For those times when you need to take a break from indulging, my Detox Green Smoothie does exactly what it says. Whether it’s after a restaurant tour on vacation or a weekend family feast, there may be times when a detox is much needed. Instead of taking products to help bring your body back, all you have to do is blend up these ingredients to help with bloating and regularity, and for an added boost, this even kicks up your metabolism!

Detox Green Smoothie

Detox Green Smoothie

Health Benefits

Just by looking at my Detox Green Smoothie, you can probably take a hint that it’s healthy from the green color. Green smoothies usually contain ingredients that help the body in various ways, and this one is especially targeted for a detox. First, let’s start with the green ingredients, the celery and spinach. Celery may seem like an interesting choice for a smoothie, because it actually is. Celery is high in fiber for regularity, and it’s low in calories as well. On top of being beneficial for eyesight, the spinach also boosts metabolism and provides a good source of fiber as well.

Next, we have ginger, a powerful root that is popular for its benefits on digestion as well. Mango, aside from naturally sweetening the smoothie and being high in Vitamin C for immunity, is also great for healthy digestion. As you can tell by the trend, all of these ingredients help with digestion, which is vital for detoxing.

The last ingredient is green tea, which is full of antioxidants and also boosts metabolism. If you are sensitive to caffeine, you can try a decaffeinated version.

Meal Prep Smoothies

Meal Prep Smoothies

Smoothie Tips

Since this smoothie takes green tea, it’s best if the tea is chilled. I just make extra and reserve some for my smoothies in a separate jar, that way you don’t have to brew a cup and wait for it to cool down just for the smoothie. I also find it refreshing to switch up my smoothies from having a milk-base, like almond milk, to something else like tea that has its own set of benefits.

If you have the time, you can use fresh fruit for this Detox Green Smoothie, but if you want to save time, you can use frozen fruit. I keep a bag of frozen mango in my freezer because it is so much more convenient. If you decide to use fresh fruit, just add some ice to the blender (affiliate link).

I have a variety of smoothie recipes that can help you develop a smoothie meal prep. I can get tired of the same flavors every single morning, which is why I like to switch it up. This Detox Green Smoothie is a great way to clean up that digestive system while drinking something delicious.

To meal prep, I find that mason jars are a convenient way to keep the ingredients together and ready to be added quickly to a blender, but you can also use freezer bags or other containers. Just make sure to keep the green tea out of the freezer and add it when you’re ready to blend.

Sometimes what we eat during the week can take a toll on us, so every now and then, switch up your meals so that you’re giving your body a chance to take a break. Keep my Detox Green Smoothie in rotation and you’ll start your mornings off feeling better than the night before!

Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie

Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie

Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie

Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie

There is something just so comforting about the taste of peanut butter, and my Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie delivers that with each sip. Even though this smoothie may taste like an indulgent milkshake, it’s actually something you can enjoy without all the guilt. The flavor combination of peanut butter, banana, and almonds are a favorite to many, so why not start your day off with a smoothie like this?

Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie

Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie

Health Benefits

Just because my Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie tastes so decadent doesn’t mean it’s bad for you. In fact, I carefully chose the ingredients to ensure that you’re getting some important nutrition first thing in the morning. You can also drink this as a dessert and not have to worry about tons of sugar in the evening.

First of all, I used peanut butter powder in this smoothie to give it that PB flavor. I buy it in the bulk bin at my local grocery store, and they actually stock this brand (affiliate link). Using peanut butter powder helps to reduce fat in this recipe, and it also makes it a lot easier to blend and distribute the flavor evenly.

Next, I wanted a drink full of protein to help build muscle and tissue, so I included Greek yogurt, as well as almonds. Greek yogurt is thicker than regular yogurt, so it helps to give this drink a thicker texture. The almonds also provide some fiber to help clean the digestive system.

Bananas are also great to add any smoothie, not only for their taste and texture, but also for their nutritional benefit. They are high in potassium, which can help with sore muscles after a workout. Bananas are also a great source of fiber, so drink it on up!

Meal Prep Smoothies

Smoothie Tips

Aside from the flavor, another thing that I love about this Peanut Butter Yogurt Smoothie is that it’s so easy and convenient to make. It barely requires any prep as the most you have to do is scoop, pour, and peel! You don’t even have to wash or cut any fruits.

But when I do have bananas that are close to becoming overripe, I just cut them up and freeze them. I find that freezing them in separate bags makes it really easy to just empty it out into the blender. This helps so that I’m not adding too many or too few bananas from a huge bag. If you decide to use frozen banana over fresh, just skip adding extra ice.

Mixed Berry Smoothie

Mixed Berry Smoothie

Mixed Berry Smoothie

Mixed Berry Smoothie

They say you eat with your eyes, and my Mixed Berry Smoothie will also prove that you drink with your eyes too! This smoothie is a triple threat as it has a beautiful color, it’s delicious, and it’s a healthy breakfast option full of vitamins and nutrients. The color itself is enough to make me want to blend one up and take some photos of it, because it’s not too often when you can find natural colors like this.

Mixed Berry Smoothie

Mixed Berry Smoothie

Health Benefits

Smoothies make an excellent breakfast choice because they are an easy way to get the health benefits of so many fruits all in one sip. My Mixed Berry Smoothie is packed with vitamins and nutrients from all of the ingredients that blend together to make this delicious drink. Strawberries are a great source of Vitamin C, which can help with boosting the immune system to prevent sickness. Let’s face it, we all need that especially during the winter season. The other berries featured in this drink are blackberries, and on top of containing Vitamin C as well, blackberries are also rich in anthocyanins, an antioxidant that gives blackberries their deep purple color. It’s been known that purple foods have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-viral benefits, on top of being great for brain health.

Bananas are also a key ingredient in this smoothie, as with many others. Bananas help to make smoothies thick and creamy, and they also benefit your body. They are high in potassium, which can help with sore muscles after a workout. Let’s also not forget that fruits of all kinds contain fiber for digestive, and since this smoothie contains a variety of fruits, you’re getting a good source all packed into one drink.

Since this Mixed Berry Smoothie uses almond milk, it is suitable for vegan, vegetarian, and Whole30 diets. But even if you are not on a particular diet, this smoothie would be a delicious, healthy addition to your mornings, or if you’re battling with a sweet tooth, try it for dessert!

Meal Prep Smoothies

Meal Prep Smoothies

Smoothie Tips

If you have the time, you can use fresh fruit for this Mixed Berry Smoothie. But if you want to save time, you can use frozen fruit. Sometimes, if I purchase a large quantity of strawberries and don’t get to finishing them all, I just wash them and freeze them before they go bad. That way, I always have strawberries ready to pop in a smoothie. You don’t even need to cut off the tops, and I blend them up just the way they are and it takes just fine! In fact, the tops of strawberries add more fiber to the mix and they can also help with an upset stomach.

Also, if my bananas are close to becoming overripe, I just cut them up and freeze them. I find that freezing them in separate bags makes it really easy to just empty it out into the blender (affiliate link). This helps so that I’m not adding too many or too few bananas from a huge bag.

If you decide to use frozen fruit over fresh, just skip adding extra ice. But no matter what you do, make sure to serve it up in a glass so you can see the beautiful colors!

For those times when I’m wishing I was sitting on a beach somewhere sunny, I just make this Tropical Smoothie to remind me of those times. The combination of tropical fruits blended up with coconut water deliver a natural sweetness that will have you second guessing if this is considered healthy or not. With all the vitamins and nutrients that you’re getting by drinking this smoothie in the morning, you’re bound to start your day off full of energy…which is why this smoothie is my go-to for a beach day. Health Benefits
I love smoothies because they are an easy way to get the health benefits of so many fruits all in one sip. This Tropical Smoothie is loaded with nutrients from all of the ingredients that come together to deliver a vacation in your drink. Pineapple and mango are both a great source of Vitamin C, which can help with boosting the immune system to prevent sickness. But here’s a secret: pineapple has been known to aid in weight loss. Bananas are always a great ingredient in a smoothie, and they’re also great for your body. Potassium can help with sore muscles, and bananas also provide a boost of energy which can be helpful for a busy day. Next is the coconut water, which is nature’s electrolyte drink and provides hydration. I even added chia seeds for some protein to help build muscle and tissue.

If you have the time, you can use fresh fruit for this Tropical Smoothie. But if you want to save time, you can use frozen fruit. I keep a bag of frozen mango and pineapple in my freezer because it is so much more convenient. Also, if my bananas are close to becoming overripe, I just cut them up and freeze them. This helps so I always have some on hand for smoothies. If you decide to use frozen fruit, just skip adding extra ice.

For something special and fun that takes a little more time and creativity, you can use fresh pineapple and serve the Tropical Smoothie in the pineapple shell. It’s really not that difficult to do, and if you’re really trying to have that vacation at home, this will transport you to that tropical beach in no time. To core out the pineapple, just cut off the top of the pineapple, then carefully cut the inner fruit out. Use the fruit in the smoothie, blend up all the ingredients, pour the smoothie in the pineapple shell and enjoy!

Aloe Vera Smoothie

I’ve already shared my secret to clear and healthy skin, and this Aloe Vera Smoothie definitely helps with that. I love using this plant not only on my face to help the outside of my skin, but I also love to include it in my diet to help my skin from the inside out. Aloe Vera helps to regenerate skin cells and repair and build tissue, and that’s really important as the days get longer and the sun gets warmer. This amazing plant has so many other benefits, like aiding in weight loss, so why wouldn’t you try this in your diet?

For this simple Aloe Vera Smoothie recipe, I combined two of my favorite fruits in the blender (affiliate link), strawberries and bananas, to really boost up the flavor. Aloe Vera tends to have a bitter taste and the natural sugars and flavors in the fruit help to mask that. Let’s not forget that strawberries are high in vitamin C and bananas are packed with potassium, which can both help with healthy skin. Since I used almond milk, this makes the Aloe Vera Smoothie a vegan drink that’s also gluten-free and good for the Whole30 diet.

Aloe Vera

You can get single leaves of Aloe Vera plant at Asian or Latino markets, if you’re not lucky enough to have your own plant growing at home. It may look intimidating to make but after watching my video, you’ll see that it’s actually pretty fun to cut your own Aloe Vera plant!

Pina Colada Smoothie Bowl

October 19, 2018 By My Nguyen Leave a Comment

I got inspired to make my Pina Colada Smoothie Bowl from Acai Bowls. I love the idea of making a smoothie bowl and adding variation of toppings. I make the smoothie thicker by adding less liquid so it will hold up better with the toppings. I treat it like I would my oatmeal in the morning with the added toppings. You can also substitute pineapple with frozen mango or papaya. It really wouldn’t be a Pina Colada Smoothie Bowl anymore, but it’s more the idea of having a fruit smoothie blend bowl in the morning. As long as you use starchy base like banana to be hold the toppings. Having a smoothie bowl is a great way to get all your antioxidants and nutrients in the morning and you can change it up everyday so you don’t get bored.
