If you’ve been following me for a while you know that I am very active. I hit the gym regularly, taken up kickboxing, hike or bike on the weekends and now swimming in our pool. What most of you don’t know is that I love running, but unable to run log distance because of an old injury. About 5 years ago I signed up for a Santa 10k run. I initially did a 5k Turkey Trot a month before and the plan was to do eventually do a half marathon by Summer. The trail for the Santa 10k was icy and I slipped on a patch of wet leaves and slightly tore my ACL. My right knee has never been the same. I haven’t been able to run longer than 2 miles before my knee tightens up and I’m unable to bend it.
I have tried strength training and physical therapy, but it didn’t help. My last option was surgery, which was not an option for me. I understand if I was an athlete and it was my job on the line, but I didn’t want to risk surgery just so I could run longer. Also, there was a possibility that surgery wouldn’t help or only offer temporary relief. I didn’t like those odds at all. I reluctantly gave up on that half marathon goal a long time ago, but it to this day I wish it was different.
