5 breakfast foods to prevent weight gain

If your stomach is growling before your lunch break, it may mean you need to take a break from the normal breakfast and try something new. When you eat smarter in the morning, you’ll make smarter choices the rest of the day. Give your body the fuel it needs to keep you full until the next meal and prevent a major snack attack or worse- overeating at lunch. All those extra calories at lunch could end up as extra weight. We all know how unproductive it can be to work on a full stomach after lunch, so try out these 5 foods in the morning to prevent weight gain.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal in the morning is a great way to start the day. It’s warm, comforting, and hearty enough to hold you over until lunch because of all the fiber and protein packed into one bowl. Cereal and milk might be fast to make in a rushed morning routine, but you can easily make oatmeal the night before. Try out my Overnight Oats Power Breakfast for an easy way to have long-lasting energy.

Eggs

It’s no wonder why eggs are such a popular breakfast food. Eggs are high in protein and can really fill you up. Be careful how you eat your eggs, because the more that you add, the more calories build up. If you like scrambles, adding vegetables will make it even more filling without as much guilt. Cooking eggs every morning could take a lot of time, but when you plan ahead and make it ahead of time, your breakfasts could be so fast! These Egg Muffin Vegetable Frittatas can be made in bulk and last a few days in the fridge for easy grab, reheat, and go breakfast!

Nuts

Nuts are a great source of protein, fiber, and unsaturated fat. Try sprinkling some on your oatmeal for an added crunch and nutritional punch. If you can’t squeeze in a proper breakfast, at least try to snack on nuts or trail mix to keep you content until lunch. Make sure to watch your portion size! Usually a handful of nuts should be enough.

Dark Chocolate

This sounds too good to be true, but yes, a little dark chocolate before lunch doesn’t only feel like a treat, but it can sustain those hunger pains. It’s packed with antioxidants to combat cancer-causing carcinogens, but also it satisfies sweet and salty cravings so you won’t have to find a vending machine before lunch. You can easily make your own Dark Chocolate Snacks by dipping your favorite nuts and fruits so you don’t feel so bad.

Apples

If you’re ever in doubt of what to eat, you can always grab some fruit to munch on in the morning. Fruits are full of vitamins and minerals, and the fiber really fills you up. Apples are one of the best choices and when you eat fruit in the morning, you’re taking care of one of the five servings you need each day. Aside from eating an apple whole, try to combine them with other foods, like oatmeal, to ensure that you’ll keep full until lunch. This Baked Cinnamon Apple with Oatmeal recipe would be a great weekend breakfast that would not only keep you full, but also would be really fun to eat.

What about something to drink?

Water

When you’re feeling that urge to eat, it could just be a signal that you’re thirsty. When was the last time you drank water? Hydration is so important, and since it’s recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, make sure to spread out your consumption throughout the day. If you work at a desk, keep a glass filled and take sips when you need a little lift. For those of you on the go, don’t leave the house without a water bottle. You can always add some fruits to your water to infuse it with a little flavor. Check out these ways to stay soda-free this summer and drink more water.
