If there’s one activity that’s taken up a huge portion of my summer, that’s definitely cutting fruit, and this time I’m showing How to cut Watermelon Fries. But it’s not like it sounds because I’m definitely not frying this fruit (even though I have seen it done). All I did is cut the watermelon so that the outcome is easy-to-eat, fry-shape pieces that are perfect for dipping.
The first step on How to cut Watermelon Fries is to first cut off the ends so that you have a flat surface to cut. You don’t want a wobbly watermelon and worse- a bloody mess from a wobbly watermelon! The flat edges will give the stability for the next step: cutting off the rind. This step is very satisfying because I love seeing how close I can get to cutting off the most rind with the least fruit waste. With all this practice, I’m getting pretty good at it!
The next step on How to cut Watermelon Fries is to cut the watermelon into large patties. Try to make them as thick as you want the fries to be. Then, I stack up a few patties, and cut off the edges so I’m left with a square shape. All the extra that I trim goes into a separate container for eating later…no watermelon gets wasted in my house!
The last step on How to cut Watermelon Fries is to now cut the square-patties into thinner strips. Try not to make it too thin that the watermelon fries break when you pick it up. To add my finishing touches, I squeeze some lime juice on it, sprinkle on some Tajin powder (affiliate link) for a spicy kick, and serve with coconut yogurt as a dipping sauce. The result is a sweet-and-spicy refreshing treat, and the combination of crisp and juicy watermelon with sweet and creamy vegan yogurt is something I crave for on these hot, end-of-summer days.
- Whole seedless Watermelon
- 2 limes
- 1 tbsp. Tajin
- 1 cup coconut yogurt
- Lay watermelon down on flat surface and with a sharp knife cut off one end and then the other.
- Stand the watermelon up on now one of the flat ends that were cut.
- Carve the watermelon like you would peel an orange.
- Slice into fry shapes.
- Squeeze lime juice and Tajin and dip in yogurt.
