Move over Starbucks, if you’re a coffee lover, it’s time to try something healthier in the morning to perk you up. Bulletproof coffee, or butter coffee, is an upgraded version of your favorite caffeinated drink, using nutritious fats and blended into a frothy, foamy cafe-style drink that you can easily make at home. Drinking Bulletproof coffee in the morning can actually provide a different level of energy, as well as improve brain function and accelerate weight loss. This drink is helpful in keeping your body in ketosis, a natural state for the body that is fueled by fat and increases metabolism. What is the secret to this drink? The answer is butter….and a few other ingredients.
Bulletproof coffee needs 3 very specific ingredients in order to make the magic happen: high-quality coffee, coconut oil, and grass fed butter. This drink got its name from David Asprey, who sells a whole line of Bulletproof coffee, but you can easily get all the ingredients from your local grocery store, or you can order it online from Amazon.
If you want a healthier coffee, it starts first with using higher quality coffee beans. Low-quality coffee not only tastes bitter, hence the need to add more sugar, it also contains mycotoxins, a form of fungus that adheres to dried coffee beans during processing. Mycotoxins can lead to health problems like hypertension, kidney disease, and even cancer. To avoid this contamination, choose coffee produced from higher elevations, since mold is less likely to grow, and stay away from decaffeinated coffee since caffeine protects the coffee bean from mold. Arabica beans also contain less mycotoxins than robusta.
The reason for coconut oil in this coffee is due to the health benefits of MCT’s, or medium chain triglycerides. Coconuts are high in MCT’s and helps to boost metabolism and provide long-lasting energy, more than you would get from carbohydrates, because coconut oil is used immediately for energy, and not stored. This is what helps Bulletproof coffee give you an extra boost of perkiness while burning fat. MCT also helps to regulate your appetite, which is why Bulletproof coffee is often used as a morning meal replacement. You can use coconut oil in your cup, which is more versatile in your pantry, or you can use MCT oil, a more concentrated form of coconut oil.
Not just any butter will do the trick for this drink. Choose grass-fed butter because it really does matter what the cows eat. Aside from grass fed milk being rich in essential Vitamins A, E, and Beta Carotene, it has a more balanced ratio of Essential Fatty Acids and contains 5 times more Conjugated Linoleic Acid, or CLA, than milk that comes from grain fed cows. CLA is a healthy, beneficial fatty acid that is naturally found in beef and dairy, and ironically, it’s commonly known for burning fat. The grass fed butter also eliminates the need for adding additional creamer. Kerrygold and Organic Valley are a few brands that make grass-fed butter.
It’s important to make sure you blend this coffee to fully emulsify the oils with the liquid. The results will be a frothy drink that you swear was made by your favorite barista. You can use a variety of items, from a Vitamix, to a regular blender, to a Nutribullet, to even a hand-held blender. Stirring the drink will not give you good results.
We tried the coffee as morning meal replacements for 3 days in a row. The taste of the coffee is great! The coconut oil and butter combined create a smooth consistency when blended, and it also adds a bit of natural sweetness, so you don’t have to add much of your usual sweetener. The oily combo also add an added benefit- smooth lips for the entire day! After drinking it, your lips are literally covered in this oil. Smack it around your lips around and take a pass on the lip balm. As far as the claims of energy and increased mental clarity, yes, it did increase energy more than a regular coffee, but didn’t leave the jitters. Focus was clear and the past 3 days have been very productive. But using this as a meal replacement didn’t quite fit the bill; Bulletproof coffee was used in place of a healthy morning breakfast and by the time noon rolled around, the hunger was real! In fact, by 11am, the mental clarity was often distracted by the approaching lunch.
I would recommend to not entirely use Bulletproof coffee as a morning meal replacement every day of the week, because you don’t want to deprive yourself of a healthy breakfast with fruits and vegetables every day. But a few days a week wouldn’t hurt, as long as you make up for it during the rest of the day. As always, contact your doctor for advice and what is best for your body.
- 1 cup of hot, freshly brewed high-quality coffee
- 1 tbsp unsalted grass-fed butter
- 1 tbsp of coconut oil
- Spices and flavors (like cinnamon or vanilla) and/or sweetener to your taste
- Hot water (to pre-heat blender)
- While brewing your coffee, pre-heat your blender by blending up hot water. Discard the water.
- Add brewed coffee, butter, coconut oil, and your choice of spices, like cinnamon, and/or sweetener, like coconut sugar. Tip: Since the butter and coconut oil provide a light sweetness, you can add half the normal amount of sweetener that you usually use in a cup of regular coffee.
- Blend until the liquid seems to thicken and a layer of foam appears on the top, much like a latte from a cafe. Pour into your favorite coffee mug and enjoy!
